Born during the June quarter 1889 in the Salford R.D. - ref: 8d/20, the son
of Alfred and Phoebe Elizabeth Ashes (nee Bowcock).

born: Leek, Staffordshire.   Plus 2 siblings and 1 boader.

1901 Census - 155 Ellor Street, Pendleton, Salford.   Son - aged: 12 -
born: Pendleton.    Head of household - Alfred Ashes - Married - aged: 39 -
occ: Hardware Dealer - born: Salford.  Also - Pheobe E. Ashes - Wife -
aged: 40 - born: Leek, Staffordshire.   Plus 2 elder siblings.

1911 Census - 153/161 Ellor Street, Pendleton, Salford.    Son - aged: 22 -
occ: Assisting in father's business - born: Manchester.    Head of
household - Alfred Ashes - Married - aged: 49 - occ: House Furniture Dealer

Manchester.   Plus 2 elder siblings.

WO 363 - Enlisted at Manchester on the 9th July 1917.   He was 28 years of
age, employed as a Manager and residing at 159 Ellor Street, Pendleton
(later records state 160 Ellor Street).  

He was absent from 11.20 pm on the 29th September 1917 to 11.20 pm on the
30th.  He was given 3 days C.B. (Confined to Barracks) as punishment.   He
was absent after being wired for from 6 pm on the 3rd November 1917 until
6.45 am on the 6th - a total of 4 days.  Given 2 days Field Punishment
No.2.   For stating a falsehood to an officer on the 21st January 1918, he
was given 3 days C.B.  For overstaying his pass from 9.30 pm on the 30th
January 1918 until 9.00 pm on the 1st February 1918, he was deprived of 3
days pay. 

Posted to France on the 8th February 1918. The following personal effects
were sent to his father after his death:-  letters, photographs, religeous
book, diairy, cards, receipt, photograph wallet, comb, half-penny stamp.
