Born during the December quarter 1891 in the Chorlton R.D. - ref: 8c/924, the son of William & Florence Annie Arthur (nee Jones). 1901 Census - 27 Fenwick Street, Chorlton, Manchester. Son - aged: 9 - born: Hulme, Manchester. Head of household - William Arthur - Married - aged: 35 - occ: Bookbinding Finisher - born: Hulme. Also Florence A. Arthur - Wife - aged: 34 - born: Hulme. Plus 2 siblings and 1 boarder. 1911 Census - Woodfield Grove, Ashton upon Mersey. Son - aged: 19 - occ: House Painter - born: Manchester. Head of household - William Arthur - Married - aged: 45 - occ: Bookbinding Finisher - born: Manchester. Also Florence A. Arthur - Wife - aged: 45 - born: Manchester. Plus 2 siblings. Employed by Mr. E.C. Scott, Chapel Rd for 9 years. The Battalion was involved right from the start of the Battle of the Somme 1916. They suffered heavy losses in their attack on Ovillers on the 7th July. Posted to Pommiers Redoubt on the 30th September 1916 and were in the trenches west of Gueudecourt on the 2nd October, the day James was killed.
