Trafford

Born (Ireland?) 1861, the son of James Carleton Barrett, Surgeon, R.N. of
The Castle, Baltimore, Ireland.     Married Letitia Kate Sumner during the
December quarter 1889 in the Poplar R.D. - ref: 1c/1285.

William & Letitia had only the one child - Eileen Barrett, born: 7th
October 1896, died: 16th November 1901.

1901 Census - Salisbury Hotel, Trafford Road, Salford.      Letitia Kate
Barrett - Visitor - Married - aged: 34 - born: Sleaford, Lincolnshire.  
Plus their daughter - Eileen Barrett - aged: 4 - born: Peterboro,
Northamptonshire.

1911 Census - No trace of either.

Leititia (at least) later lived at 11 Grange Road, Stretford.

The "Stuart Prince" was built in 1899. 
    
On the 22/03/17, whilst in St. George's Channel 85 miles N. by W. of Broad
Haven, Co. Mayo, Ireland, on voyage from Manchester and Belfast to
Alexandria with general cargo, she was torpedoed by U-66 and sunk in
position 55 28N 11 20W.     20 crew were lost.

Listed as Captain Carlton Barrett on the Stretford Town War Memorial and
commemorated on a window in St. Botolph's Church, Quarrington,
Lincolnshire, where Letitia was once a worshipper.

Prince"". Son of James Carleton Barrett, Surgeon, R.N. of Baltimore,
Ireland; husband of L. K. Barrett, of 11, Grange Avenue, Stretford,
Manchester. Died 22nd March 1917 aged 56 and commemorated on the Tower Hill
Memorial, London. The SS Stuart Prince was torpedoed by U Boat U66 85 miles
NW from Broad Haven whilst in transit from Manchester/Belfast to
Alexandria. There is a Memorial Window in St Botolph's Church, Quarrington
as follows; BARRETT William Carleton To the glory of God and in loving
memory of William Carlton Barrett, Captain of the S.S Stuart Prince who
nobly went down with his ship 22nd March 1917 after being torpedoed by
enemy submarine off the north coast of Ireland. Also in affectionate
remembrance of Eileen the only child of William Carleton and Letitia Kate
Barrett, born 7th October 1896, died 16th November 1901. "There's a home
for little children, above the bright blue sky". This window was placed
here to their beloved memory by his widow Letitia Kate Barrett who was
formerly a worshipper in the church."
