son of Thomas & Harriet Birkenhead (nee Stubbs).

His father - Thomas Birkenhead died in 1889, aged: 34.

1891 Census - Brookside, Kingsley, Cheshire.   Son - aged: 3 - born:
Rocksavage, Cheshire.   Head of household - Harriet Birkenhead - Widow -
aged: 33 - occ: Charwoman - born: Kingsley, Cheshire.  Plus 4 siblings.

His mother - Harriet Birkenhead, married Samuel Millington in 1897.

1901 Census - Dutton Lodge Cottages, Dutton, Cheshire.   Stepson - aged: 14

Married - aged: 37 - occ: Shepherd - born: Weaverham.  Also - Harriet
Millington - Wife (John's mother) - aged: 44 - born: Kingsley, Cheshire.  
Plus 3 siblings and 2 half siblings.

1911 Census - Pickerings O'Th Boat Crowton Northwich.  Boarder - aged: 24 -
occ: Farm Labourer - born: Western Point, Cheshire.   Residing with Thomas
& Mary Clarke and their family.   Thomas was a Cowman on a farm.   John's
mother and stepfather were still residing at Dutton, Warrington.

Married Maggie Frith during the March quarter 1918 in the Bucklow R.D. -
ref: 8a/273.   Post War Maggie was residing at "Green Hill", 2 Green Lane,
Ashton upon Mersey.
