Born during the June quarter 1909 in the Haslingden R.D. - ref 8e/112, the only child of William Robert Addison & Eleanor Anne Coates (nee Shaw). 1911 Census - Inveravon House, 42 Manchester Road, Haslingden, Lancashire. Son - (listed as ROY Coates) aged: 2 - born: Haslingden, Lancashire. Head of household - William Coates - Married - aged: 34 - occ: Surgeon - born: York, Yorkshire. Also - Eleanor Coates - aged: 36 - born: Manchester. Plus 2 domestic servants. B.A. Hons. (Manchester). Author of two books:- "The stabilisation of exchanges" : (address to the Manchester Country Conference of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries) by Coates, William Henry Roy Addison. Published 1934 Classmark: HG/635 "Our money" by Coates, William Henry Roy Addison. Published 1937 Classmark: HG/789 Gazetted Honorary Flight Lt. - 14/04/1939. Commemorated on the Manchester University Memorial and Metro-Vickers Rugby Union Football Club Memorial. To provide night fighter cover for the D-Day invasion fleet and then for the Normandy bridgehead, 604 Sqn was moved to A.8. Picauville, France on the 6th August 1944. Flying a Night Patrol, north of Paris in Mosquito NF.XIII - No. MM528, they encountered a Ju88, but the a/c was hit by something and crashed. The pilot was thrown clear and survived but F/O.
