Born during the December quarter 1877 in the Barton upon Irwell R.D. - ref:
8c/660, the son of John & Mary Elizabeth Clough.

Employed as an Accountant's Clerk with Messrs. Haworth & Co, Coopper St,
Manchester.   Before joining the Army in April 1916, he had been subject to
giddiness attacks.

Enlisted in April 1916.   Unmarried - stationed at Altcar, where he was
still iundergoing training.

Died in the Bridgewater Canal at Brooklands - his sister - Mrs. Landon, 4
Bannister St, Stretford, identified his body.

The local newspaper reported on the inquest of Private Clough held at the
Sale Sessions House.    The inquest was informed that he had come home from
training for two days furlow on Saturday 17/06/1916 and had made no
complaints about his Army service, on the contrary, he appeared to be in
good spirits.   At about 10.00 am on the Monday morning 19/06/1916, he said
that he was going to look at their father's grave in Stretford Cemetery and
that he would be home for around 12.30 pm.    It was presumed that from
there he had taken a walk along the canal towpath, through Sale and on
towards Timperley.    He was not able to swim.   He had 5/- (25p) in his
pocket.

Lincolnshire Ecko dated: 23rd June 1916 - stated that he had joined the
Army in April 1916.   He lived with his mother at Bannister Street,
Stretford.and had gone to visit his father's grave.

Evidence of recovering the body was given by Private Shearon of the 1/5th
East Lancashire Rgt, who was convalescing at the Linden Lea House Military
Hospital on the corner of Brooklands Road & Whitehall Road recovering from
the effects of being buried alive after a mine explosion.

An open verdict was given that - "he was found drowned".    SDGW states
that he died on the 22nd June 1916.

Buried 24/06/1916 - Burial No. 7,687.

His father - John, died: 14th September 1911, aged: 63 years and his mother
- Mary Elizabeth, died: 19th March 1923, aged: 71 years.
