Born on the 14th February 1922, the birth being registered during the March quarter 1922 in the Chorlton R.D. - ref: 8c/1456, the son of Arnett Richardson & Sylvia May Dunton (nee Rawson). His Christian name is spelt "Fredrick" on his birth registration. In 1921, his parents resided at 20, Park Avenue, Timperley, (where he was born perhaps?) and his father recorded as being born in the Orange River Colony of South Africa. He was an electrical engineer employed at Metro-Vics, Trafford Park. Exhibitioner at Christ's College, Cambridge. 1939 - National Registration. "Sunnyside", Bentinck Road, Altrincham. Son (Christian name now spelt "Frederick") - born on the 14th February 1922 - At School. Head of household - Annett R. Dunton - born on the 2nd August 1885 - Married - occ: Electrical Research Engineer. Also - Sylvia M. Dunton - born on the 10th March 1888 - Married - occ: Unpaid Domestic Duties. Plus three members of the Muir family residing with them. There were two large bombing raids over Germany during the night of the 29th/30th August 1944. One to Konigsberg in which 15 Lancaster bombers and most of their 7 man crews were lost. The other was to Stettin in which 24 Lancaster Bombers and most of their 7 man crews were lost, on of them being Fredrick's aircraft. Flying with 166 Squadron, he was piloting a Lancaster Mk.iI bomber, No. PD261 - AS-S, and took off from RAF Kirmington at 21.10 hrs on the 29th August. On-route to Stettin, his aircraft was shot down by FLAK and He and his entire crew were lost and were buried in collective grave in the Poznan Old Garrison Cemetery, Poland. He had already completed his required tour of duty, but returned to undertake another tour. A first "tour of duty" was 30 missions, the second - 20 missions. Death reported in the Sale & Stretford Guardian dated the 15th September 1944 as residing at Bentinck Road, Altrincham. CWGC states that his parents lived at Paignton, Devon. His father died there in 1955. M.I. - A defender of freedom, A lover of his fellow man. A servant of God. Probate - Administration granted to his father at Chester on the 1st February 1946, his Estate being valued at £990. 9s. 5d. . |
