Born during the March quarter 1890 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/196,
the eldest son of Thomas & Susannah Hammond (Nee Williams). 

1891 Census - Gannons Square, Knutsford Inferior, Cheshire.   Son - aged:14
months - born: Knutsford, Cheshire.   Head of household - Thomas Hammond -
Married - aged: 33 - occ: Labourer - born: Yorkshire.   Also - Sarah
Hammond - Wife - aged:20 - born: Staffordshire.   Plus a 2 month old
brother - Thomas Hammond.

Attended St. Margaret's Cof E School.

1901 Census - 8, King Street, Altrincham.   Son - aged: 11 - born:
Knutsford, Cheshire.   Head of household - Thomas Hammond - Married - aged:
42 - occ: Night-soil Man for Council - born: Silsden, Yorkshire.   Also -
Susannah Hammond - Wife - aged: 30  - born: Hanley, Staffordshire.   Plus 2
younger brothers.

1911 Census - The Ridge Jubbulpore, Overseas Military, Ships and Overseas
Establishments.  Soldier serving with the 2nd Battalion Cheshire Regiment,
The Ridge, Jubbulpore, India - aged: 21 - born: Knutsford.     No trace of
his parents at Altrincham.

Enlisted into the 2nd bn Cheshire Rgt c1908.

The advertiser dated the 18th June 1915 reported that on the 1st June 1915,
he was arrested and brought before the Knutsford Police Court for being
absent without leave. from the Cheshire Rgt.   The report stated that at
the outbreak of War on the 4th August1914, he was serving in the Cheshire
Rgt in India.   He was returned to the UK and arrived back on the 24th
December 1914.   On the 15th January 1915, he was posted to France, but on
the 23rd February was invalided home through sickness.  Since then he has
been stationed at Birkenhead and left without leave on the 29th May 1915.  
He was confined to Knutsford Police cells until an escort back to Barracks
was arranged.

A regular in the Army with nine years service much of which spent in India.
   In August 1914 he was sent to the front (presumably Belgium).     Apart
from some sickness in 1916 he had been at the front from 1914 until his
death in 1917.

He was a cousin of Detective Sergeant Hankey of Altrincham Police Station.

Pension Records.   Dependent listed as Mrs. Susannah Hammond (Mother) of 29
Russell Street, Altrincham.  Later crossed out and 87 Lloyd Street,
Greenheys, Manchester inserted.  His father is also listed as a dependent,
but as a later addition.  Their application for a pension for the loss of
their son was refused as they were not considered to be financially
dependent.

Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1918, which states
that he was aged 29.
