Born during the September quarter 1915 in the Barton on Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/1084, the son of Michael William & Julia Lavelle (nee McGarry). Flying with 218n Sqn he took off at 17.32 hrs from RAF Downham Market in a Stirling Mk I bomber No. W7614 HA-J for a bombing mission to Fallersleben. The a/c crashed between Langenhagen in the northern suburbs of Hannover and the small town of Kaltenweide, some 3 km further north along the railway. Three crew members died and four were taken prisoner. *Listed as William on both the Stretford and Trafford Park War Memorials. | |||
