In 1891 his parents were residing at 19, Lowlands Road, Runcorn, Cheshire, where William Henry was born, the eldest of five children. The family moved to Altrincham c1895, where they resided on Stamford Street. His mother ran a greengrocer's shop on Regent Road, whilst his father was employed as a joiner. There is 1 redacted record at this address - Beryl perhaps? Unable to trace Ethel May Nall at this time. The Penrith Observer dated the 19th November 1940 reported that William had been summoned before the Penrith Magistrates Court for leaving a car not immobilised in Great Dockrey, Penrith.. Fined £1. William was employed at the Gloster Aircraft Factory, Sunningend Works, Rowanfield Road, Cheltenham. The factory, situated alongside the main railway line through the town, was bombed on the 11th December 1940 and 23 people were killed. This was Cheltenham's worst night of air-raids - some 2000 incendiary bombs and 155 high explosive bombs were dropped, killing 23 people. He lodged with his brother at Cheltenham. Died at Sunningend Works. Buried in Cheltenham Cemetery on the 16th December 1940. CWGC states that he lived at 16 GRAYE Road, Sale. [There is no such Road, I believe this to be 16 Grange Road, Ashton upon Mersey]. The CWGC also has his age wrong - Aged: 36 according to their records. I suspect that these errors were because little was actually known about him at Cheltenham? If he was working up in Penrith in November 1940 where he was charged with not immobilising his car, then he had only been employed at Cheltenham for a very short period of time. Strangely I have not been able to find a record of his death in BMDs. | |||
