Born during the June quarter 1921 in the Ormskirk R.D. - ref: 8b/1745, the
son of Henry William & Gladys Annette Pickering (nee Tibbets).

In 1911, his father was aged: 33 and employed as a Hatter's Salesman,
residing at 19 Stockton Street, Moss Side, Manchester.   Gladys was aged:
19, was residing at 277 Stamford Street, Ashton-Under-Lyne, her father was
an 'Outfitter'. (presumably how they met)   They were married in the Barton
upon Irwell R.D. in 1915.

There is only the ONE Robert Anthony Pickering commemorated by the CWGC.

HMS Nile was a shore establishment, rather than an actual vessel and was
based at Ras el Tin Point, Alexandria.  HMS Nile had a large number of
personnel on the books - mainly those based in the Eastern Mediterranean.  
 Robert was their only rating lost that day and is recorded as "killed"
