Trafford

Born during the June quarter 1904 in the Salford R.D. - ref: 8d/112.  
Birth registered as Alphonse Richard Seel.   He was adopted by George &
Annie Turner.

1911 Census - 44 North Hill Street, Salford.   Adopted son - aged: 7 -
Scholar - born: Salford.    Head of household - George Turner - Married (28
years) - aged: 50 - occ: Carrier - born: Salford.     Also listed - Annie
Turner - wife - aged: 40 - born: Salford.   They had produced one child who
had died.

Alphonse married Edith Roberts during the December quarter 1929 in the
Salford R..D. - ref: 8d/679 and they resided at 108 Robert Hall Street,
Salford.

1939 National Registration - 108 Robert Hall Street, Salford.    Alphonse
R. Seel - Married - born: 19th March 1904 - occ: Electrician at Glucose
Factory.   Edith Seel - Married - born: 8th August 1907 - occ Garment
Machinist.

CWD Report No. 99.    Recorded wrongly as Alphonse STEEL otherwise Turner. 
  Died as a result of blast and falling masonry at Corn Products Ltd.
Trafford Park, from where his body was recovered at 16.30 hrs on the 24th
December 1940 and taken to the Church Street Moruary, Stretford.    His
body was identified by his brother-in-law - William Wilding, 64 Harmsworth
Street, Salford to whom his body was released for burial.  He was employed
as an Electrician.

Killed at Corn Product Ltd.     Corn Products over the years has had
several names but always on the same site (south side of the canal near the
new Centenary Bridge).   Names have included:  Brown & Polson;  CPC(UK)
Ltd;  Cerestar and now Cargill's.

CWGC - (or TURNER). of 108 Robert Hall Street, Salford. Died at Corn
Product Ltd.

His widow married Alfred Worsley during the March quarter 1942 in the
Bolton R.D. - ref: 8c/681.

45th Lancashire (Ford's Motors Trafford Park) Battalion, Home Guard.

A company of Local Defence Volunteers, the original Home Guard, was raised
by K. G. Maxwell on behalf of Trafford Park firms.   After various changes
in organization, this force became the 45th County of Lancaster Battalion
Home Guard, over 4000 strong, of which C Company containing the two M-V
works units was commanded successively by E. Strong and H. Lawson-Jones.  
By this time the company specialist officers were entirely M-V men, and the
Battalion headquarters staff mainly so. 

The 45th Battalion Home Guard was known as 45th Lancashire (Ford's Motor's
Trafford Park) Battalion, Home Guard.  Administered by the Lancashire
County Territorial Force Association.   Manchester Regiment badged Home
Guard Battalions were the:

23rd Lancashire (Oldham) Battalion,  25th Lancashire (Leigh) Battalion, 
26th Lancashire (Wigan) Battalion, 
44th Lancashire (Stretford) Battalion,  45th Lancashire (Ford Motors
Trafford Park) Battalion,  46th (South Manchester Renold Chains), 
47th (Wythenshawe),  48th (Manchester/Ardwick),  49th (A V Roe, Newton
Heath),  50th (Ancoats),  51st (Ashton under Lyne), 
56th (Manchester/Post Office),  58th (Manchester/Post Office).  59th
(Manchester/Post Office),  61st (Manchester University) 
63rd (A V Roe Chadderton).   In addition there were five Home Guard Rocket
Batteries badged Manchester Regiment.
