Born during the December quarter 1895 in the Newcastle under Lyne R.D. -
ref: 6b/82, the son of Hugh & Selina Turnock (nee Shufflebotham).

1901 Census - 139 Church Street, Butt Lane, Talk.   Son - aged: 5 - born:
Talke, Audley.   Head of household - Hugh Turnock -  Married - aged: 46 -
occ: Coal Miner - born: Talke, Audley.   Also Selina Turnock - Wife - aged:
42 - born: Talke, Audley.   Plus 6 elder siblings.

His mother died in 1904, aged: 45.

1911 Census - 139 Church Street, Butt Lane, Talk.   Son - aged: 15 - occ:
Apprentice Fitter at Fournrey ??? Works - born: Butt Lane, Talke.   Head of
household - Hugh Turnock -  Widower - aged: 51 - occ: Collier - born: Butt
Lane, Talke.   Plus 4 elder siblings.

There is an MIC for a Robert Turnock.  Could this be Robert before entering
the RAF?   This one was a Private in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers - No. 29953.
 Awarded only the BWM & the VM.

Attended the Young Mens Bible Class at Broadheath Congregational Church. 
Interested in the bowling club and the Young Mens Institute.

Enlisted in May 1917.   3rd Class Air Mechanic.

The disastrous defeat of the Italian Army by Austro-Hungarian and German
forces in the Battle of Caporetto led to the transfer of 3 RFC Sopwith
Camel fighter squadrons (Nos. 28, 45 and 66), two two-seater squadrons
(Nos. 34 and 42, with RE8s) and No. 4 Balloon Wing to the Italian Front in
November 1917.  No. 139 Squadron (Bristol Fighters) were added in July
1918.

Death reported in the 12/07/1918 edition of the Altrincham Guardian.  Died
of double Pneumonia whilst at a rest camp abroad, whilst on his way to the
front.

A Section of No. 29 Stationary Hospital was at Turin in 1918.

There is no obvious link the Altrincham area.  Perhaps he had come to work
at one of the engineering works on the Broadheath Industrial Estate???
