When war broke out (04/08/1914) the 2nd Bn East Lancashire Rgt were
stationed at Wynberg, South Africa.   On 01/10/1914 they sailed from Cape
Town, arriving at Southampton on 30/10/1914 and on to Hursley Park to join
the 24th Brigade, 8th Division.    On 06/11/1914 they landed at Le Havre.
On 18/10/1914 the 24th Brigade joined the 23rd Division, until the
15/07/1916 whyen they returned to the 8th Division.   On 03/02/1918 they
joined the 25th Brigade - 8th Division.    At the end of the war
(11/11/1918) they were stationed at Pommeroeul, West of Mons.

Between the 2nd October and the 11th November 1918, the 8th Division, as
part of VIII Corps, took part in operations known as the "Final Advance"
and were fighting in the Artois area of Flanders.    On the 17th October,
they captured Douai.    Sergeant Vickers presumably died in that assault.
