Born during the December quarter 1919 in the Bolton R.D. - ref: 8c/910, the
son of Samuel & Martha Ann Whittle.

M-V. - Joined the Metro-Vicker's Company as a Machine Operator in April
1939.   Joined the M.N. in August 1939.    Presumed drowned in September
1941 when the ship in which he was serving was sunk by enemy action.

The M.V. Cingalese Prince (London), Prince Line Ltd.   Torpedoed and sunk
by German Submarine, U-111 in the South Atlantic, ESE of St. Paul Rocks, in
position 02.00S.  25.30W, while sailing independently on a voyage from
Bombay to Liverpool, via Cape Town & Trinidad with 11,156 tons od General
Cargo, including Manganese Ore & Pig Iron.   The Master - Captain John
Smith, 48 crew and 8 gunners were lost.   15 crew & 3 gunners were rescued
after 12 days adrift.
