Trafford

Born during the March quarter 1894 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/180,
the second son of Samuel & Annie Woodhead (nee Metcalfe).

1901 Census - 6 West Grove, Sale.   Son - aged: 7 - born: Sale.  Head of
household - Samuel Woodhead - Married - aged: 33 - occ: Solicitor's
Managing Clerk - born: Newton Heath, Manchester.   Also - Annie Woodhead -
Wife - aged: 38 - born: Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland.  Plus 5 younger
siblings and 1 domestic servant.   This included Eric James Woodhead aged:
10, who was also killed during WW1.

1911 Census - 6 West Grove, Sale.   Son - aged: 17 - occ: Solicitor's Clerk
- born: Sale.  Head of household - Samuel Woodhead - Married - aged: 43 -
occ: Solicitor's Managing Clerk - born: Newton Heath, Manchester.   Also -
Annie Woodhead - Wife - aged: 48 - born: Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland.  Plus
5 younger brothers.   This included Eric James Woodhead aged: 20 - occ:
Insurance Clerk, who was also killed during WW1.

A member of St. John's Church choir and a Sunday school teacher.   Member
of Sale Moor Cricket Club and Sale RUFC.   Member of Sale (St. Paul's) Coy.
Church Lads Brigade.

Passed his Preliminary Law exam and was to have articled to Messrs. Farrar
Morgan & Co (Solicitors) Manchester.   The firm in which his father was a
partner.

Joined the Territorials 2 years before the war.  An excellant shot for
which he won trophies.

His father received a letter form Second Lieutenant T.T. Sellars dated
03/06/1915 informing his father that early on Sunday morning 30/05/1915, a
message had to be carried across a very dangerous part of the trench and in
so doing he was shot in the head by a sniper.     Reported as being at
Grantham at the time of Cyril's death. 

Death reported in  the 25/06/1915 edition of the Altrincham Guardian, which
states that he was a Corporal.  Also listed as a Corporal on St. John's
Mem.

Cyril's brother Eric, was also killed in this war.    His brother, Harold
was serving with the Cheshire Rgt in the UK.    Their father was a Sale
solicitor and he was one of five brothers - the others were - Neville
residing Marsland Rd, plus Alfred and Frank (also a solicitor) residing
Northenden Rd.

The "Brooklands - Past & Present" books by Irene Collins states that the
Woodhead brothers sang in the Church Choir, taught at the Sunday School,
and supported the Mens' Society and the Gleaners Union (an organisation to
promote foreign missions) as well as playing football and cricket for local
clubs.

Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1916.

Along with his brother - Eric James Woodhead, he is commemorated on the
family gravestone in Sale Cemetery.
