Born during the September quarter 1892 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref:
8a/189, the son of Frank & Annie Woodward (nee Fairhurst).

1901 Census - Glebelands Road, Ashton upon Mersey.   Son - aged: 8 - born:
Ashton upon Mersey.   Head of household - Frank Woodward - Married - aged:
33 - occ: Hat Cap Merchant - born: Keysoe, Bedfordshire.   Also - Annie
Woodward - Wife - aged: 34 - born: Ashton upon Mersey.  Plus 1 domestic
servant.

The family later moved to "Allington", Queen's Road, Ashton upon Mersey.

Edwin's father - Frank Woodward died in 1910, aged: 41, this prompted the
family to move to a smaller house on Grange Road, Ashton upon Mersey.

1911 Census - 5 Grange Terrace, Grange Road, Ashton upon Mersey.   Listed
as Leonard - Son - aged: 18 - occ: Clerk in Motor Company - born:  Ashton
upon Mersey.   Head of household - Annie Woodward - Widow - aged: 44 -
born: Ashton upon Mersey.   Plus 4 siblings and a maternal aunt.    [Edwin
was employed by J.H. Rigby & Co. and/or J.F. & H. Roberts, Manchester]

At Northwich on the 14th February 1913, he joined the Territorial Army  as
a Trooper in the Cheshire Yeomanry on a four year engagement.  He was then
aged: 20 years, 6 months, 5 feet 6 inches in height, with chest expansion
of 33 to 35 inches.

At the outbreak of WW1 he was mobilised on the 5th August 1914 and
transferred into the 4th T.F. South Lancashire Rgt.   Served on Home
Defence in the UK until 1916.  Posted to France on the 20th September 1916,
embarking at Southampton and arriving at Rouen the following day and into
the 8th Battalion, South Lancashire Rgt. 

He was wounded on the 26th  April 1918 - the fith day of the German 1918
Spring Offensive and died in the 53rd General Hospital, Boulogne on the 1st
May.   The list of personal items returned to his mother was Letters,
photos, 2 wallets, religious book, safety razor and blades, Ingersol watch,
cigaretes, purse, visiting cards, note book, 2 half-penny stamps.  By 1920,
his mother was residing at 17 Grange Road, Ashton upon Mersey.

Death reported in the 31/05/1918 edition of the Altrincham Guardian.

Formerly 861 Cheshire Yeomanry.     Listed as E. Leonard Woodward on St.
Mary's Memorial and in the newspaper.
