Trafford

Born during the June quarter 1885 in the Camberwell R.D. - ref: 1d/900, the
son of George Hall & Eliza Helen Yuill (nee Taylor).  Baptised at All Souls
P.C. Harlesden, Middlesex on the 1st November 1885.

1891 Census - School Master's House a Part of School Building, Common,
Felstead, Dunmow, Essex.   It appears that John, his parents and siblings
were all residing at this address with John's paternal uncle, also John
Yuill, who was the actual Schoolmaster.     John G. Yuill - Son - aged: 5 -
born: Middlesex.   His father - George Hall Yuill - Brother - Married -
aged: 31 - occ: Printer's Manager - born: Scotland.   Also - Eliza H. Yuill
- Wife - aged: 30 - born: Middlesex.   Plus 2 siblings.

First attended the Burghley Road Primary School on the 23rd April 1894.

1901 Census - 10, Irlam Road, Sale.   Son - aged: 15 - occ: Clerk at
Printing Works - born: Harlesden, Middlesex.    Head of household - George
H. Yuill - Married - aged: 41 - occ: Manager at Printing Works - born:
Scotland.   Also - Eliza H. Yuill -Wife - aged: 40 - born: Newington,
Middlesex.    Plus 2 siblings, his maternal grandmother and 1 domestic
servant.

1911 Census - "Heathfield", 8 Wardle Road Sale.   Son - aged: 25 - occ;
Clerk - born: Middlesex.   Head of household - George H. Yuill - Married -
aged: 51 - occ: Manager - born: Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland.   Also
Eliza Yuill, - Wife - aged: 50 - born: Middlesex.   Plus 1 younger brother,
his nephew and 1 Domestic Servant.

Attended Manchester Grammar School..   Employed by Messrs. Henry Blacklock
& Co, Albert Square, Manchester for 13 years.     Played outside right for
the Northern Nomads F.C.

Death reported in the 25th July 1916 edition  of the Altrincham Guardian.

The 01/06/1917 edition of the Altrincham Guardian reported on the Sale
Conservative Club's AGM when the names of all those who had died during the
past 12 months were read out and recorded - Sgt. J.G. Yuill;  John
Ainsworth;  Sidney Drake;  Frank Eckersley;   A. Kynock;  F.R.B. Lindsell; 
Tom Taylor;  G.W. Vickers & J.H. Fryer (recorded that the latter had only
been a member for two years !!!).       I can only find Sgt Yuill from that
entire list ???

Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1917.

Listed as a Sergeant in the H. Blacklock & Co. - Roll of Honour Book, which
includes a photo of him.  Also Sergeant on the family gravestone.

Commemorated on the family gravestone in Sale Cemetery, which states that
he was in the Machine Gun Corps.

Jack Yuill (1885 – 1916) – British footballer 

Born John George Yuill  on 2nd October (????) 1885, Jack became an English
amateur footballer who played in the Football League for Manchester City
and Stockport County as an outside right.

Jack was educated at Manchester Grammar School. During the early part of
his football career, he worked for the printing firm Henry Blacklock & Co.
Ltd. in Manchester.  As a footballer, Jack played for Northern Nomads, Sale
Holmfield, Manchester City, Oldham Athletic, Stockport County, Wrexham,
Chester and Port Vale. He scored one goal in four Central League
appearances for Port Vale during the 1911–12 season.

In September 1914, one month into the First World War, Jack enlisted as a
Private in the 19th (Service) Battalion of the Manchester Regiment.  He was
posted to the Western Front with his Battalion in November 1915 and went
into the trenches near Berles-au-Bois the following month. By June 1916,
Jack had been promoted to the rank of Corporal and was operating as part of
a Lewis gun section. He took part in the successful attacks of the 30th
Division on the first day on the Somme and was promoted to Lance Sergeant
after the Capture of Montauban. Jack was killed during the Capture of
Trônes Wood on the northern slope of Montauban ridge, between Bernafay
Wood and Guillemont on 9th July 1916 and is commemorated on the Thiepval
Memorial.
