A Wireless Operator/AirGunner, he joined the RAF in 1937 and Coastal Command in 1939. His body was washed ashore at Pellworm, a small island off the coast of Schleswig-Holstein. Had three other brothers in the forces, two of whom were lost - Eng/Officer Bernard was lost at sea in September 1940; Petty Officer Joseph Arnold was lost on H.M.S.
