Born in Ireland??? on the 17th August 1913, the son of William & Anna Cahill of Phibsborough, Dublin. 1921 Census - No Trace of him or his parents. Served as a police constable in Ashton upon Mersey, being appointed on the 29th August 1938. 1939 National Registration - 4 Hollins Grove, Sale . Thomas Cahill - Born on the 17th August 1913 - Single - occ: Police Constable. He was residing at the home of Comely & Ada E Blowfield. In April 1940, the 1st Bn Irish Guards were deployed to Norway as part of the 24tth Guards Brigade. Death reported in the 13/09/1940 edition of the Sale & Stretford Guardian. Lc/Cpl Cahill fought in the Battle for Narvik and was posted missing. He had escaped together with two other Guardsmen and tramped for 150 miles in freezing conditions to Sweden. Suffering badly from exposure, he was admitted to hospital where he died. He is commemorated on the Cheshire Constabulary War Memorial and in their War Memorial Booklet. |
