| Born during the March quarter 1922 in the Bucklow R.D. - ref: 8a/283, the son of Tom Leslie & Jessie Pierpoint (nee Young). Attended Altrincham Grammar School and Ellesmere College, Shropshire. Intended to study for a B.A. degree at Cambridge, but decided instead to join the RAF at age 18 years. Played Rugby for the School. Following a tour at Malta and the far east, 605 Sqn was reformed as a Night Fighter Sqn at RAF Ford (now the Goodwood Motor Circuit) on the 7th June 1942. Flying Douglas Boston and Havocs aircraft. A Pilot with a Night Fighter Squadron Gazetted on the 16th June 1942 for his promotion on the 29th April 1942. Killed in a flying accident at Middleton on Sea, Sussex. Cemetery Records List his number as being 226855. Buried 02/09/1942 - Burial No. 11,419. Death reported in the 4th September 1942 edition of the Sale & Stretford Guardian. P.O. J.K. Sutcliffe & Sgt Burbridge who had flown on a number of missions with him, attended his funeral. Commemorated on the private family gravestone in Hale Cemetery. His medals have recently (Nov 2011) been purchased by someone in Shropshire - he went to college in Shropshire? | |||
